"The earth does move but we´re not aware of it. Tiring is more to be feared for the stellar sphere than the terrestial globe".
... observed by Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), Italian physicist and astronomer, when speculating about the earth´s rotation.
For the earth the stars were seen to rotate about the pole star every day. But was it the earth that was spinning or were all the stars rotating in unison? Simplicity argued for a spinning earth, but Galileo also considered the problem from an intriguing angle -- the enormous ´power´ that would be needed to have the stellar sphere -- so far away, so many and such large bodies -- moving instead of the earth.
